in the tank, but you have to inspect yours and diagnose and repair according to what parts are in use. Even at the ford garage they need tag numbers from the guy who runs the tests. if he wants to replace or order the pumps. They always said the info showed 3 possible for each tank. You would verify recalls or service bulletins had been considered in the diagnosis as well.

The mid to late 80's had several systems, they went from lift pumps and a rail pump, to dedicated separate high pressure pumps. Theres also a selector valve. Fuel diodes were added by recall as time progressed. Kind of a tough one till you get all the info and inspections done with testing.

My 88 has 3, one in Each tank and a external one. I have the 4.9l it runs like new BUT the external one leaks bad. How it still runs good surprises me. Anyone know any tricks how to fix the leak?

I have an 88 f150 lariat with a 5.0l v8 5 speed manual. I replaced both fuel pumps in each tank and bypassed the inline pump, still dont have enough fuel pressure. if I were to add an inline fuel pump around where the external fuel pump is, would it give me enough fuel pressure to the fuel rails? I'm trying to avoid spending almost 250 bucks for the factory inline pump. I want to buy a universal inline pump. All other fuel system parts have been replaced, fuel filter. Fuel pumps in both tanks [except for the pump on the frame.] So question is if I add an inline universal fuel pump would i have enough pressure to keep it running when I give it gas.. as on now it idles fine but bogs out as soon as you give her a little gas. Definitely not enough pressure coming from just the fuel pump in the tank. Thanks in advance

Ok I'm not a mechanic. I have and 88 f150 4.9l now I've hear that the 4.9l requires more pressure? Some ppl lie? But if yours came with the external fuel pump. Then I would say that your gunna need another one. But 250.00 seems high! I'm sure you've looked around pretty good right?
