Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Okay so i have a 1987 ford f150 xlt lariat 5.0l v8, the truck runs fine when its cold but when its warm up it turns off like you turned the key off and yes it will start right back up when i turn key off then i can start the truck back up then it will run for 20 minutes then turns off again but in stead of turning the key off I would try to start it again when its still in the on possession it would just turn over.

Sounds like the typical ignition module failure. But this old I would also replace the distributor pickup at the same time as the module.

G A yea i changed the ignition control module 2 times the first one smelt like it was burning up slowly not sure about the other one though i did change the ignition switch on the column and ajust'ed it a little bit better it didn't shut off on me when it was warm then i turned it off then the truck was colling off a little bit when i went to start the truck up it was idling for 2 minutes and turned off but it still crank right back up got home i put the old ignition switch back on and it wouldn't start back up so put the new one back on and it still wouldn't start up.

Thanks for the points. Check for power at the ignition coils positive post with the key turned on, then when you turn the key to crank, you should have power in both key positions, if you have power with the key on and it goes away when you turn it to cranking position then you may have a bad ignition switch, it is out of adjustment or the throw rod is not going all the way as it is worn out in side the steering column. After that is checked and fixed if there is a problem then test for a negative trigger signal at the coils negative post during cranking, if no trigger signal then it’s either the ignition module, distributor pickup or the wiring. This old you may have a bad harness.
