Could be water pump going bad or stuck thermostat. But Cavaliers known for head gasket issues with age. I would double check that coolant level in radiator is correct(not just the overflow tank) if low add some and check for leaks. If coolant level is correct then check oil does it look like a milkshake? Does coolant look black or oily? Is white smoke coming out exhaust pipe? If yes to either then possibly blown head gasket. If no to all then do a pressure check on cooling system. If pressure starts to drop then search for leak. If not the. Crank up car with pressure tester still hooked to radiator. Let car run for a while. Does pressure tester pulsate? If so possibly blown head gasket.
