The starter turned out to be on the back of the engine between the engine and the firewall just remove the air cleaner...

On my 1991 Colt hatchback 1.5L fuel injected engine w/ manual tranny, it was not where Ross above me said. It was under the intake manifold & on top of the manual transmission. Dang hard to see, used mirror. Remove bolts from left side engine compartment. Must remove that skid plate thingee under car in middle front, from below. Must remove bracket that supports intake manifold from below to drop it down & remove wires. Must remove plastic wheel well from driver side wheel to finally get it out. You will spend most of your time below the car. Hard as heck to stab the new starter in the tranny and get bolts started. Took me 3 days from scratch just to get it out without this info. Good luck, you will need it. (and also a lot of persistance)
