i have a 1981 lincoln town car 2 door and there is oil leaking out of the back of the transmision where the driveshaft goes in

No. Just drop the drive shaft out and replace the seal. Not that hard of a job on most older cars.

I hope it's just a rear seal. Oftentimes, the bushing in the tailshaft housing is wiped out because the Transmission is wiped out. Driving with a bad u-joint can have the same effect - shake the crap out of it until all the bushings, seals and bearings give way.
