86 Eldorado coup. Serpentine belt

Asked by Stephanie Nov 30, 2014 at 08:15 AM about the 1986 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I drive a 86 Eldorado coup, 4.1 liter v8.
Recently my ac pump froze up and I
couldn't afford to replace it or take it into
a shop so I just purchased a shorter belt
that would bypass the pump. I believe the
one on there now is a 78 inch belt. My
problem is that it keeps falling off the
pulley system. It's tight when it gets put
back on, I've tightend the tensioner etc
but it continues to come off. Not sure
what to do. Any advice would be
awesome.

You might not have it routed properly. Make sure each toothed side of belt is on a toothed pulley, and each flat side is on an idler or tensioner, with flat surface Also there are idlers that replace the clutch and just spin and not run compressor, for just that purpose and go back to original belt

Well my alternator went out, could that mess with the belt? Make it spin slower? I'm wondering if that could have anything to do with it.
