Spark plugs

When I put the correct spark plugs in my 2003 ford
focus the car runs like crap plugs that are shorter
at the threaded end work better.  Why is this?

Are you getting the right spark plug? If it calls for a plug with a longer thread, why would you even put in a shorter plug? Also is the gap set correctly?
