I would suspect a loose electrical connection or a cold solder joint.

took apart dash and pulled speedometer. looks like it is mechanical. just cable from tranny and gears in unit for speedo & odometer. can't find diagram of unit anywhere without paying for a manual.

Is the speedometer cable good? They sometimes break at the ends. I didn't know anybody used cables anymore.

speedo cable looks good by eye but outer part could be worn and thats what may run speedo as inner part runs gears for odometer. I have everything out and just hooked up speedo. will test tomorrow. thanks for your input
