Does the clutch have to be engaged for the car to start?

My clutch pedal snaps to floor so I need to
replace my slave cylinder, but my car will
not spark. Need to know if that is the
reason before I order any parts.

I've got an 83 944 and it will start with the clutch pedal out (not depressed), so it doesn't have a neutral safety switch. Other 944's I've worked on functioned this way. Is your timing sensor (on top of bell housing) set to the correct clearance? Is it working at all? This is a primary cause of a no spark situation.
