You likely have a defective brake-shift lock. It's why you have to depress the brake peddle to start the car, and if faulty, it can hold the key in. If you have an emergency shift release, that might work better than disconnecting the battery. Disconnecting batteries in moderns vehicles is a bad idea as it causes memory loss and fuse failures.
