grinding when starting

When I try to start I get a grinding noise.  Sometimes it starts fine and sometimes I get the grinding noise

Your starter solenoid is going out. Replace the starter right away or you will end up replacing the fly wheel too.

Or the Bendix is not fully engaging the flywheel. Just as FoR says, you could end up chewing teeth off flywheel, and then that gets real expensive
