My 1984 Nissan 300ZX Manual lurches badly when letting off gas

Normal suspects were addresses like new plugs, plug wires, distributer, fuel
filter, mass air flow, TPS, injectors checked.  The car drives fine except when
letting off gas then shuttering driveline bucks and jerks.  Engage clutch or step
on gas peddle is only way to abort the lurching.  Clutch works fine.  The car
has a raw gas smell at the tail pipe when idling.  Has anyone with  Z31 had a
similar problem?
