Low voltage on gauge

Asked by Cindy Dec 19, 2014 at 11:14 PM about the 1999 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My husband left his,1999 dodge durrango at work because he said that while he is driving along, after the D starts to get a little warm. That the voltage gauge inside the truck started to drop way down when he would x celerate and that every thing in the truck would dim way down at the same time. Air and all.  But that the engine still had its power to get up and go. He is wondering if that's normal as it gets older. and if he keeps giving it gas to xcelerate will the engine died because of low valtage. Also, what would cause low valtage to everything inside.

Wild guess.... Alternator going bad. Something inside, perhaps a diode going bad and the heat making it worse. If you just take a simple multimeter and place it on the battery when the vehicle is running, it should be over 14 volts. Keep checking it as it gets warm to see if the voltage output drops.

Just had my 02 Durango with a drop in my voltage. Was out of town so drove a ways and then all the guages started jumping on and off. Felt like it was the alternator so replaced that. It started, showed a charge drove it a ways and then it dropped again. Turned out it was a Fused link in the alternator wire. Had like a heat tape on it, cut it off and found the ends were loose and by the time I took the nuts off it all fell apart in my hands. Around 4 bucks so a really good thing to check for anyone that has the same symtoms
