Motor swapping

Asked by Mark Dec 24, 2019 at 05:08 AM about the 2001 Dodge Dakota Club Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm thinking about buying a 2001 dakota
crew cab. It has no engine in it currently. It
had a 4.7. Can I put a 4cyl in this without to
much trouble? Or even a 6cyl. I'd prefer the
4cyl for the gas mileage. But would get by
with a 6cyl if I had to.

Any time you are installing a different size engine, there will be all kinds of problems. Starting with the motor mounts, exhaust system, Engine Control module, wiring harness, emissions, transmission, etc, etc, etc. This will be an expensive project.

If this will be a daily driver, keep shopping for a complete vehicle! The initial price may be attractive but the end cost will be more than the vehicle is worth if you factor in parts, your time and labor as well. Hope that helps! Jim
