What V8 engine is compatible for a Ford Explorer 2013?

Asked by Guru39LCW Jun 26, 2020 at 07:45 PM about the 2013 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I’m looking to replace a V6 engine in my 2013
Ford Explorer as it has over 256,000 miles.
The body and interior are in great shape. What
V8 engine would be compatible with a 2013
Ford Explorer?

Since the Explorer is AWD, and you want to complete an AWD swap, the 5.4L engine from the Expedition might be a good start. Usually when replacing a different engine in a vehicle, it is all custom work. Are you looking for a project vehicle and have lots of extra money and time? It's always best to research to find a mechanic or someone online who has done the swap before. Most times that means you will be installing an engine, transmissions driveshaft, maybe rear end, ECM, wiring harness's and multiple coding and troubleshooting. So that $6k will soon be $20K or more. Why not just buy an Expedition to save yourself the headache or swap in another 3.6L V6 from a 2001 to 2019 Explorer and all you would need to do is the engine? Figure that would be around $1K. plus install, so around $2K to 3K depending on who installs it.

There are no compatible V8 engines. Your generation Exploder only came with a V6 or a 4 cylinder. Since your SUV is FWD installing a V8 would be a huge project requiring a complete re engineering of the chassis.
