How do you tell if the alternator is bad?

Battery light is on. Have jumped the car and ends up dying after running for Fe
minutes.

If you have AAA, call them, they offer a free battery service and will check out your entire charging system at no charge. It seems like both are bad, and the AAA sells a new battery with a great guarantee, all brought directly to your location.
