Why does my battery die as soon as I connect it?

My daughter was driving, dash lights flashed, all lights went out, car died, battery dead. After fully charging, it dies on connection - ignition off.

You may have a major short between the two battery terminals - clearly something fried and is creating a short. Check battery cables for continuity and shorts.

After charging the battery again, I noticed while on the charger, the green light came on saying it was fully charged, but every few seconds now it's dropping back to 75% on the gauge, It's going back and forth now. Could this mean a short in the battery?
