What is wrong with Reverse????

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2002 Dodge Durango SLT. It goes forward but will not go reverse. It goes into reverse but there is nothing there, even rolls forward while in reverse if your on a slight hill. My tranny fluid was low by about 2 Quarts, yes I said 2 quarts. It got that way because I did not know you had to check the levels while in Neutral as specified on the dip stick. Lately I had noticed some vibrating when accelerating and originally thought it was the u-joints or tires or something of that nature. Now I am thinking its slipping but only slightly. Could it be the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) or some other sensor or is my reverse gear gone and I need a new or used transmission???

From the research that I have been doing, sounds like the rear bands need to be adjusted, and or TPS replace along with new tranny fluid and filter. AAMCO is going to diagnose for me NO COST!! What a deal. I will comment when I find out some answers!

Usually, reverse is first to go in tranny, and there is no adjustment to band,s in and auto tranny,by running low fluid ,you have burn,t the band,s,,meaning may have to rebuild,or replace the tranny.

T_S_T I saw someone else had the same exact issue on a Dodge Forum and the bands is what they said took care of it. So you think I am better off looking for a salvage tranny and replacing it?

Yes,most of the time a replacement is the cheapest way,a rebuild will cost more,

A lot of durangos do not have a fluid pump when they are in neutral or park... that burns out most auto trannys on these vehicles. You can have an aftermarket pump put in by aamco as well as new gears and whatever happened to be damaged. But the cost isnt pretty. However if you already own your vehicle the cost is worth it considering the next 3 months payments!

My truck runs fine but will not go in reverse. You can drive just fine in forward on all the other gears Any idea what this might be and an approximate cost to do it. My truck is a 1998 Dodge Dakota 4 wd 6 cyclinder

Does not answer exactly what it may be. I know nothing about vehicles so can't fix it myself. I just want to know an approximate cost if it is replacing the band. The truck is only worth $1000 so I wont put a new transmission in it. Ill just buy a new truck or sell it and buy a used truck.

I have an 99 Dakota 4wd v6 it moves and shifts through the gears but has a horrible sound underneath like the rearend or the transfer case the catch it ONLY MOVES FWRD IN 4wheel drive NOT REVERSE... but in 2wd it has reversed and drive all that but sounds like a fking tank going down the road... I already replace the front drive shaft the mechanic said it’s the rearend but I don’t think the even checked it out
