What is the difference in Rav4 awd vs 4wd

The 2012 RAV4 shows 4D , 3, 2L on the console.... are you driving in 2 wheel
drive normally or 4 wheel??  IS the 2 wheel low front wheel or rear wheel
driven??

Thank you for the your quick answers! For what conditions would I use 3rd gear? For fuel use and tire wear, wouldn't 4 wheel be better than All wheel drive?
