Alternator or transmission?

2007 Honda Odyssey with less than 50k miles. Early tonight
was making a strange whining sound. Drove a few places.
Later came out and van did not want to move in reverse. It
shifted into reverse, just wouldn't physically move. Had to put
in neutral and push out of parking space. It would move
forward, yet acceleration was very slow. All the dash lights
came on and my headlights were very dim. Finally, got it
home and turned it off. Tried to restart and it cranked, but
didn't turn over. Numerous people keep saying it's the
alternator. My question is: How can the alternator effect the
van by not wanting to move in reverse? Thank you for any
advice you can offer me.

I think everyone is saying the alternator because of the dim lights and it not turning over. Simple solution to solve it, use jumper cables and start your van. If the lights appear fine and it turns over without an issue, your alternator may indeed be at fault. Unfortunately, not being able to reverse may be an additional problem.

Thank you, Terry! I had the alternator and battery fixed/replaced and all is great again. I can now go in reverse. I guess the transmission wasn't getting enough power from the alternator/battery to want to go in reverse. Thank you again, I appreciate your help!

My 2005 Honda Odyssey won't move in reverse only moved like an inch & stopped & slips real bad in drive we changed the fluid also but still the same issues . Does this mean we need a new transmission?

Terry, my 08 odyssey doesn't work on reverse but I does go forward, the alternator it's bad, should I make reverse problems?? Thank you for your help, I'll be thankfully,
