Cable problem?

So someone tried stealing my car last night
and took out the part you put your key in to
start it. They also cut a wire there as well. I
thought I fixed it and had it running, got it to
my house and then the battery died and
when I open the door the gas gauge moves
without having the keys in the ignition.

Here’s another pic of the ignition. They cut the gold looking wire right there

I had a mechanic come and fix it. Could it be a problem with a fuse or something like that?
