what side would i check the coil at and how

Coilpack or coil on plug? COP is notoriously hard to test without an oscilloscope, you can use a multimeter to check the primary LT windings though (but that is only useful to see if there is a break in the primary windings) but that doesn't say anything about how the coil will perform under load.
