Why does my manual shifter just move around and won't go into gear?

Asked by sac7751 Oct 23, 2017 at 09:42 PM about the 2004 Dodge Neon SE Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The manual shifter just moves around like it's not hooked up. I removed the
shifter boot and can pull up on the long end of the spring by the shifter that
points toward the rear of the car and let it pop back down and then the shifter
will work and go into the gears.
