Transfer Case, CV Shaft or ?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 Durango SLT. Several weeks ago it started making a 'racheting' noise when I depress the gas pedal. If I ease onto the accelerator, I can drive the vehicle with no noise. It happens in lower gears as well as higher gears and in reverse. Even at 70 mph if I depress the accelerator too hard I will hear this 'racheting' noise as though some teeth were not meshing and slipping by each other. I have been told it may be the transfer case, a very expensive repair, and I have read about similar problems being resolved with replacing the cv shaft(?).  Any ideas?

It is best to try to locate where it is coming from have some one ride with you and sit in different location´s in the truck and find as close as possible where it is coming from. You can also get under your truck and grab on the drive shaft at each end and see if there is any play in the joints. Also lift each wheel of the ground and grab on top and on the bottom of the tire push it in and pull it out and see if there is any play there to rule out wheel bearings. Also check if there is any exhaust leak by keeping the truck running and feel if there is a breeze out of every joint of the exhaust. Those are simple things for you to start out with. Always start checking the easy and cheap things first :-)

I just started having the same issue as everyone else with my 2005 AWD Durango. I called Chrysler and they acted like they have never heard of this problem before so I started a claim. Everyone who is having this problem needs to call Chrysler at 1-800-992- 1997 and file a claim and maybe we can get Chrysler to pay for this as it seems to be happening with a lot of vehicles. It sounds like a defect to me not just wear and tear
