Not on a 2004, engine needs to get to operating temp. in order for the closed loop to happen for the computer to be able to adjust air fuel mixture properly, and other sensors to work properly. If you need to run without a thermostat, you may have a plugged radiator, or there are air pockets in the system, or a bad head gasket.
