I need to add oil to my 2004 dodge durango slt and do not know what kind.

What kind of oil is in it now? Try to use the same brand and type (dino or synthetic). 5W30 is a safe (common) type. Check out this site for everything you ever wanted to know about oil -- http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/
