I have an 05 neon, after driving my car 4 a while i can cut it off,then turn my key like as if to turn the ignition on an the thermostat registers right under hot. But goes away once crunk.

No leaking antifreeze,  fluids are full,
doesn't smell like coolant is leaking

Sounds like you may just have a bad temperature gauge or the sending unit in block to temperature gauge is bad.
