Have you tried to press down when trying to release? Sounds like the latch may be in a bind or that is stuck in the wrong position.

you might want to check the fuses , or go threw th back seat and see if there is some material binding up the latch
Can not open the back hatch, doesn't even make that clicking sound that it does when you try to open it
