2005 dodge durango

what do you think might be wrong with my
durango ~

We were driving back from Idaho we were in
page az going up a really steep hill. when my
husband stepped on the gas to go faster up
the hill it made a weird noise and quit going.
He stopped it immediately and put it in park
but it doesn't shift into reverse or drive. Just
wont move at all! Makes this really weird
noise( to me because I'm not a mechanic ya
know) I think it sounds like a winding noise
kind of... Made me think it was a belt or
something. But it doesn't shift into any gear
abs /or go. It starts up just fine. Hubby spent
all that money and time on those silinoid
things or whatever they are called he's super
pissed! And he said it wasn't the
transmission cus there wasn't any metal
shavings in the pan. Have any idea at all
What you think it could be? I dont knit exact
model but it's not a 4wd and has a hemi.
