On a 1998 528i with the base five- speed manual transmission, the vehicle requires 1.6 quarts of transmission fluid. With the optional automatic transmission, the 528i uses 3.5 quarts of transmission fluid. If you overhauled the transmission, it requires 8.2 quarts of fluid to refill it and an additional 1.1 quarts to fill the torque converter, if needed, for a total of 9.3 quarts.
