2004 ford escape 3.0 starts and sounds great, but no power and almost won't shift at all and the engine heats up really fast almost to an over heats within minutes. Could be something with exaust system. It was running perfectly and plugs were changed and has not ran since

sounds like a plugged cat converter in the exhaust. There are three converters on your Escape the front and rear exhaust manifolds and another downstream one. The bad news is the exhaust manifolds are expensive as hell parts and labour, the good news is it is usualy the down stream one that plugs up. Since there are no O2 sensors after the rear on you can remove it and put in a straight pipe with no effect at all or no engine light coming on.

run horrible yes, it would have no power what so ever and wont shift properly, over heat im not too sure, you have nothing to lose buy cutting the pipe in front of the rear cat and give it a try
