Ford escape 4wd shutoff

Hi I have a 2012 ford escape xlt. When it was
bought I was told the four wheel drive never shut
off. It's hard to turn the wheel and I have even had
a cradle break under the left back side. My
question is is there any way to shut the four wheel
drive off so it doesn't tear up or not bog down my
motor?
