2006 Grand Cherokee A/C compressor question

The A/C in my '06 GC was blowing warm air, even on max. I was going to try
and recharge it with a A/C Cold kit from AutoZone, but the compressor wasn't
turning. It was turning and cycling just fine the day before. Does the
compressor only spin at a certain temp?
