Help with fans not turning on

Asked by Christina Mar 27, 2023 at 07:20 PM about the 2002 Buick Rendezvous CXL AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently bought a 2002 rendezvous. Today it

started overheating and with further

inspection I noticed the fans were not turning

on. I tried to turn on ac to force them on and

That didn’t work and the air blew warm from

the vents. Relays and fuses test fine.

Thermostat was replaced 3 years ago. Car

has 2 fans and neither one turns on. I’m

considering replacing the fan but is there

anything I could be missing before I throw

$200 into buying that part?

If the relays are good then see if there is a code for cooling fan controller, if you have a good scanner you can command the cooling fans to turn on and see if they run. If you don’t have a good scanner then you can hot wire each fan motor just to see if they do indeed run. Make sure you do this with the key off.

Unplug the coolant temperature sensor and start the engine. The check engine light or service engine soon light will come on, ignore it. Both cooling fans should come on at high speed. If they do, replace the coolant temperature sensor. If not you need to check the fan motors. When the computer loses the signal from the coolant temperature sensor it assumes that the engine is overheating and commands the fans on at high speed and disables the air conditioning. Also check the relays again. You should have three. Two low speed relays, 4 pins each, and one high speed relay, 5 pins. Hope that helps! Jim
