bad cv joint?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 02 Sebring ( 4cyl dohc) is making a noise that increases with the speed of the
car. I thought it was a bad wheel bearing but when I checked the wheels there was
no play and when spinning the wheels no apparent noise. After driving for a bit  I
felt the bearing housing and there was no heat build up. I did notice that the
passenger side axle was hot closest to the transmission and definitely cooler
toward the wheel. Is this indicating a bad inner cv joint or possibly a bearing  in
the tranny on the axle. The usual movement in the axle at the tranny does not
seem excessive. I am leaning toward a bad cv joint.

Mine did turn out to be a wheel bearing. I had a garage finally check it out and they replaced the driver side wheel bearing which took care of the noise. Apparently the heat on the axle was normal as stated previously. I have heard that sometimes one of the bearings or race will "flake" a small piece which will cause the noise even though the condition of the bearing is not bad. It was worth the cost to bring the car to a garage as opposed to start replacing other suspected parts which would have been a waste of money. Sometimes leaving the job to the experts is worth the cost and avoid the aggravation.
