Grinding noise

Asked by Jacob Mar 31, 2017 at 07:18 PM about the 2001 Dodge Durango Sport 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When going down the road my truck will make a
high pitch whining noise if i press the gas it will
stop if i press the brake it will slow down and if i
hold the brake it will slow down till it stops
normally around 35 mph. When i put it in reverse it
way louder and goes away if i switch gears
sometimes it will still make the noise when i go
back to reverse the front drive shaft was taken out
by previouse owner and its awd pls help its getting
worse

Removing a front drive shaft in an AWD vehicle is probably a really bad idea. I suspect transfer case problems. I would also check out the rear differential which may have worn out bearings.
