Why do I have a difficult time getting the key out of the ignition ?

If the shifter for the automatic transmission is not all the way to the left when in the park position in my car I cant get the key out. i'm thinking there is a worn out spring in the shifter that doesnt pull it over all the way sometimes. I sometimes have to pull it to the left and the key comes out every time.
