why might a car not run but it starts?

It starts but it doesn't run

If you meant cranks but doesn't run. Spray some quick start in the throttle body and see if it starts for a bit, if it does, it's fuel related issue. Check fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is good and it runs when you spray quick start, replace crank sensor. If it doesn't, check for spark at the spark plugs
