2007 V8

Asked by tingo98 Aug 19, 2019 at 06:24 PM about the 2007 Ford Explorer XLT V8 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2007 Ford Explorer from a dealer's auction. It has about 112k miles.
Put in new computer, just changed alternator, had engine work done. Im about
to put on new shocks, which revealed it needs a new suspension system
which will probably run me about another $1k, between parts and labor.  Is it
worth it?? IM afraid that if I do all this work to it, then i may have tranny issues
next. Its very frustrating.  I have terrible luck with cars and am thinking of just
leasing something new. thanks for your opinions.

Who is giving you advice on what repairs the vehicle needs? If the car was in running condition when you bought it it would be unusual for it to need so much work. I dont know what you paid or how much it has cost you in repairs so far, but I would determine the Kelly Blue Book value and then decide how to proceed. If the cost of the vehicle plus your repairs is still at or under the KBB value, it might be OK to do some additional work. If not, sell it and get something that will give you a little more peace of mind.

Are you capable of doing suspension repairs yourself? Not really difficult if you have tools. Whatever estimate you received for suspension repairs from a mechanic, you can probably cut the cost in half or more if you can do the work yourself. You'll have to have a shop do the alignment after parts are replaced.
