What would cause a 2000 Ford
explorer anti lock break light to
stay on

A problem with the ABS system. Maybe it is a bad wheel speed sensor. If you can get the ABS codes read you should know what the problem is.

Try a visual check. The wire for the sensor on explorers is not attached well to the steering knuckle, just a plastic clip for most. If it comes loose it can wear clean through via steering..
