2004 Chrysler Sebring coupe, service engine light soon came on and couldn't be read?

Asked by GMBarlett Apr 04, 2014 at 04:04 PM about the 2004 Chrysler Sebring Coupe FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The service engine light came on, and the worker at Autozone couldn't get a code. His
tool lit up like it was plugged in, but wouldn't read anything, just kept saying to connect
to the vehicle. He said a mechanic would have better tools but would charge me for it.
Is there any other place I could take it for free or cheap? For reference, when I first
started the car this morning it sputtered and seemed weak for about 30 seconds, then
the light came on and it drove normally for the rest of the day.

update: the car started and drove fine for 2 days with the light still on. On the third day, and since, the light has been off, so I guess I'm good. Any insight would still be appreciated though.
