How do I restart the MFI in my 2010 Jetta after changing the battery?

Asked by VWhatsup Aug 11, 2016 at 07:49 PM about the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen SE FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I had tried to have Advance Auto put a new battery in, but they refused,
saying they didn't to be responsible if the electronics got screwed up. I was
like, huh? It's a battery, I've changed them a half dozen times in other cars;
no problemo. So, I had Sears put one in. Eight months down the road, I get
an oil change and guess what: the service reminder from the last oil
change can't be reset, along with everything  else on the MFI. In fact, NO
menu even comes up. Advance Auto was right!

That can only be reset at the dealer. There is a little tool that must be used when there is any electrical work to be done. I just purchased a fancy model that plugs right into the OBD 2 port. All this starter in 2005 some rigs you couldn't unhook the power supply and some you could, but now everybody is that way.

Thank you. Wish I --- and Sears --- had known about this. And I had gotten the oil change at the dealer. You'd have thought that they would have noticed that they couldn't reset the service reminder and called me.

Most of the lube guys don't look for things like that they just get it in and out as quick as possible.

So a simple power supply via 12V socket will keep the computer sustained for a battery change?

Yep. I use a fancier model that plugs right into the OBD2 port, it uses a sealed motorcycle battery. It is really good for repairs that take longer than just a battery replacement, it can last for days.
