A hard knock could be a bad rod bearing. Check your oil level and your oil pressure.

It sounds like it could be a bad input shaft inside the transmission I have a 2005 Pacifica and my tranny just went out going down the highway it mad a bad knocking noise that I thought was coming from the alternator on the top of the motor...i bought a new alternator and didn't get a chance to put it in before the tranny went out now the motor runs perfect and quiet but no transmission ended up being my input shaft...
