My 2012 bmw x5 xdrive35i is making a loud whirring noise every 5 -10 seconds that starts quietly and quickly intensifies then stops. It happens in idle and in drive. Any thoughts on what this could be

I was first thinking front wheel bearings but read on to see this happens at an idle also. Probably check all the pulleys for the serpentine belt, idler pulleys like to go bad. Take the belt off to check, the pulleys should spin smooth, and no play in them.

Maybe the A/C compressor is going bad.
