Check the cooling system associated with the vehicle. My daughter's explorer was doing the same thing. Everything with the AC checked out ok. Giving up in frustration I decided to check other things like oil level, trans fluid, antifreeze, etc. Since she believes periodic checking is limited to purchasing gas when the needle is around "E". I noticed the recovery coolant tank was empty. Meaning the radiator was low also. I filled the radiator and coolant bottle and told her I could not find a problem. Two days later she called me and said the ac was working perfectly all the time. All I did was add coolant. Maybe there is a cut-off device which turns off the ac if the engine approaches an overheat condition. Worth the time to check the coolant and see if the thermostat is working properly.

I had the mechanic at work check everything but I'll have it checked again. Thanks for the tip I'll look into it, I'll let you know the outcome.
