If the DIY suggests it's not a blown headgasket, any other possibilities in your experience?

What causes the vehicle to go in to limp mode? The data message says, drive moderately, transmission issue, check engine light comes on. But when I take it in for diagnostic, the messages never mention any transmission issue(s), and I end up spending $$ on other things, then after so many miles (200) it goes in to limp mode again? If it's a transmission issue, shouldn't that report come up when diagnosed?
