Getting blue/gray plume of smoke when I start my 2001 Bmw 740i

Asked by Morgiebmw Oct 29, 2018 at 07:41 PM about the 2001 BMW 7 Series 740i RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 bmw 740i with 129,000 miles on it.   A few times a week I get a
blue/ gray plume of smoke when I start the engine.   Is this serious?   I know I
have a small leak in the oil pan so I monitor my oil level.  Could that be the
cause?   Is there an oil leak somewhere else possibly?  How quickly do I need
to get this checked out?

Did you do anything to resolve the blue smoke? Mine does the same thing 2001 740 IL

I had the valve covers replaced but it turned out the oil dripping from leaking oil pan was the real culprit. Ang

You could have the valve guide seals replaced if this bothers you. If the oil consumption is at an acceptable level I would leave it alone.
