Burning oil

Asked by rmeglen88 Sep 14, 2016 at 12:20 AM about the 2005 BMW 5 Series 525i Sedan RWD

Question type: General

I have a 2005 BMW 525i with 120,000 miles on it. For the
past few weeks it has been blowing off blue smoke(oil)
just about every time I start the car. The amount of smoke
along with the duration of how long it last fluctuates from
time to time. Recently has gotten worse with a very large
amount of smoke every now and then. Usually burns for
about 8-15 seconds then stops. While I've had this issue
for a few weeks, I just recently got a message on my
screen saying "increases emissions. I have no clue what
the problem is..... Any idea?

You can hope Tom is right and you do not need engine work- do you have a qualified BMW mechanic? Well.........DO YOU?!

That could be considered normal consumption. What engine do you have? The 5 series V8 engines are notorious for burning "excessive" amounts of oil when they hit about 100K. I put "excessive" in quotes because BMW says that a quart every 700 - 800 miles is expected for their older V8 engines. Contact your BMW dealer. They should have specs for oil consumption for your engine.
