my wife has a 2007 328 xi. Every so often there is an issue with starting it. what could the problem be

No recent work, battery tested and in good order. Every 4th or 5th time key plug inserted and it will not stsrt. Then you plug it in and it fires off. Thought batteries in keys needed changed , so new ones put in, still sporadic starts. Thanks

There was a recall for this issue, it was a bad connection from the battery to the fuse panel(main power wire). BMW replaced mine for free and now the car starts every time.
