What's the life span of the thermostat

Asked by butterkam Jun 22, 2015 at 01:45 PM about the 2004 BMW 3 Series 325xi Sedan AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Took my car in with the engine light on and was told the thermostat need changing.  Done that.  Now 2 years later took it in with the same problem and told the same thing and have it replace with gasket and all.  Did I have a faulty thermostat in the 1st replacement or the workmanship.  1st replacement was at 65,000+ km, now it has 85,000 km.  Shouldn't the thermostat last longer than 20,000km?

Yes it should last longer, but that said all depends on the other coolant system component,s operating right, meaning water pump, and radiator, may need to have them checked.
